Grandma’s Dressing, Simple and Comforting

Grandma’s Dressing, Simple and Comforting

Prep: 10 minutes Bake: 15-20

My family only had a few recipes we cycled around while I was growing up. However the holidays were a time to go all out. My grandmother had this recipe for dressing that all of us children loved dearly. I was lucky to learn it while I had the chance. This is a beloved dish for my brothers and I.

Ingredients

  • ~ 2 bags of herb seasoned, cubed stuffing dry mix

  • 1 egg

  • ~ 2 cups chicken or veggie broth

  • 1 cup milk

  • 1/2 stick butter melted

  • Garlic and onion powder and any other spice you might like

Prep

I didn’t have cubed, I only had shredded thanks to shortages so mine looks a bit different
I think we only add the egg last since my brother and I kept stealing tastes while she was preparing this.
I used half the ingredients since I was cooking only for me. This is so easily adjusted.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 F

  2. In a large bowl add 1 bag of the stuffing

  3. Heat the milk and butter then pour on top

  4. Use a fork to fold this through the stuffing

  5. Heat 1 cup of the broth and do the same

  6. Add the next bag of stuffing and heat and add the last of the broth

  7. Add the spices as you please

  8. Keep folding until all of the stuffing is softened. It should hold its shape without being crunchy when you taste it. (My brother and I love the taste of the unbaked stuffing and would taste test constantly for Gram)

  9. When the taste and consistency is how you'd like (you can always add more broth or more stuffing to balance the taste. Gram always did) add the egg and stir

  10. Pour this mixture into a glass dish that works out with the amount you used, so that you can spread it, but have it only be an inch to two inches deep.

  11. Bake for 15-20 minutes until the top is browning and hardening

Afterthoughts

It holds its own in more ways than one. I’ll always love this.

This is a staple in my family for holidays and special occasions and my brothers and I love it dearly. The stuffing is a soft and herb-tastic taste that stands on its own and pies great with turkey and ham. This is dressing like you could use as a turkey stuffing and it goes great that way or alone. A little bit of gravy isn’t too much but I don’t believe it needs it. An easy and fast side dish that anyone that likes flavoured bread will love.
