Crumbly Apple Cinnamon Turnovers

Crumbly Apple Cinnamon Turnovers

Prep Time: 20 - 30 minutes Bake Time 15 minutes

Most people know of apple turnovers and they are a tasty sweet that give an illusion of not being too heavy. They’re fun pastries that have a great apple taste. We made these that have a crumbly pastry outside instead of a more firm pastry dough. I added cinnamon in with the apple pie filling for that extra great taste because it’s such an easy flavor that always works great. I also snuck in some vanilla in the icing to give a bit of something as well.

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup butter

  • 8 oz cream cheese

  • 2 cups flour

  • 1 can Apple Pie Filling

  • Cinnamon as desired

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1-2 tbls ice cold water to help bonding

  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar

  • 1 1/2 tbls milk

  • Splash of vanilla extract

Prep

I used my hands to finish off folding it together.

I cut the squares I could put, then reformed and flattened the remaining dough until I used it all

I sometimes folded long ways, others corner to corner

  1. Preheat oven to 425 F

  2. Add the flour and salt to a bowl and mix together

  3. Cut the cream cheese and butter into cubes

  4. Add to the flour and salt and fold/cut into each other. This isn’t a mixing but pressing over and over so that it stays crumbly but eventually is able to hold it’s shape. I used a paddle to stir over and over again before using my hands to squeeze it together

  5. Lightly flour a surface and add the dough ball to it

  6. Use a rolling pin to flatten out into as big a square as you can that’s as thing as you can where it won’t break when stretched a bit. Like a half centimeter maybe?

  7. Cut this into 4 x4 squares for as many as you can to use all the dough

  8. Scoop a small bit of the pie filling into a square and add cinnamon as desired

  9. Fold over and press the edges to seal them

  10. Take a fork and flour the tips. Press in the seam to crimp this around the edges.

  11. Add a couple slashes to the top to help stop explosions

  12. Add to a tray and bake for 30 minutes or until starting to brown

  13. Let cool on a wire rack for 10 minutes

  14. While cooling add the sugar, milk and vanilla to a bowl and stir until it is a smooth icing

  15. Drizzle this over the turn overs. I used a spoon and this worked great

  16. Serve Warm

Afterthoughts

Parchment paper under the wire rack made for much easier cleanup

While the dough gave me some trouble as I was impatient about the time it takes to fold in butter, it made the perfect crumbly crust to enjoy. These were warm, gooey inside and crumbly outside and melted in the mouth. A great, sweet taste that would make anyone happy. These were simple, cheap ingredients and a fun way to make a dessert all ages can enjoy.
